Flat for Education at AMIS (Association for Music in International Schools)

The AMIS Music Educators Conference in Kenya gathered an inspiring community of teachers who are shaping music education across private and international schools worldwide. Our team had the privilege of joining this event and connecting with educators from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. The conversations we had offered a unique window into how global private schools operate, what they value in music education, and what tools they are looking for in their classrooms.

Flat for Education was one of only four sponsors at the event, which made it possible to speak with teachers in depth about their needs and their approach to technology. The feedback we received was clear. International schools are looking for accessible, intuitive, student-centered music tools, and Flat for Education is perfectly positioned to fill that role.

What Makes AMIS Unique

AMIS is unlike any other conference we attend. The educators know one another well, and many have worked in several countries over the course of their careers. Their connections are global and long-standing. Every two or three years, many of these teachers transition to a new international school where salaries, resources, and technology expectations vary widely. The Kenya conference attracted about one hundred teachers, most of whom work in schools with diverse student bodies and strong fine arts programs.

What Private and International Schools Told Us

Teachers already recognize the value of Flat for Education

We were encouraged to hear how familiar many educators already are with Flat for Education and how naturally it fits into their teaching. Several private and international schools shared that they have begun integrating Flat for Education into their music curriculum, using it for composition, theory, and creative lesson design. What stood out most was how quickly teachers felt comfortable with the platform and how strongly they expressed the need for tools that support creativity, accessibility, and modern music learning.

Schools see Flat for Education as affordable and high value

Several teachers told us directly that Flat for Education is priced so fairly that it feels like an easy decision. They compared this to other tools that are significantly more expensive and require long training periods. In an international school environment, simplicity and value are essential, and Flat for Education stood out for both.

Flat for Education is now seen as an alternative to SmartMusic

One of the most surprising moments at AMIS came when multiple teachers asked the same question. What is the difference between Flat for Education and SmartMusic? It was clear that private schools are actively seeking modern, flexible tools that support composition, theory, performance tasks, and creative music making. Flat for Education is being recognized as a powerful alternative because it is accessible, intuitive, device-friendly, and usable across grade levels and topics.

Many music programs use more than one digital tool, and our goal is to support whatever combination helps teachers teach and students learn. Flat for Education is often used as the creative and instructional foundation, where students build literacy, compose, collaborate, and complete standards-aligned assignments. For programs that also use SmartMusic, the two tools naturally complement each other. Teachers can build musical understanding, creativity, and notation skills in Flat for Education, then guide students to SmartMusic when they need focused practice, tone work, or performance accuracy. This gives students the best of both worlds: a place to think and create, and a place to refine and perform.

Strong interest from schools with mixed devices

Many international schools rely heavily on Chromebooks, iPads, and a mix of older laptops. They were impressed by how smoothly Flat for Education performs on all of these devices. No installation is required, and everything works through the browser. This flexibility is a significant advantage for schools with diverse technology ecosystems.

A Global Community of Music Educators

One of the most memorable parts of AMIS Kenya was experiencing the performances. Several student groups presented music that reflected the strength of arts education in international schools. The level of talent, musicianship, and cultural diversity was inspiring. It reminded us why we do this work and why giving students accessible creative tools matters.

We also appreciated the openness and curiosity of the teachers. Many did not know that Flat for Education existed as a school-ready platform and were excited to discover a tool that could support creative curriculum planning without adding technical complexity.
