It's time to reflect on the beauty of nature through music! For this challenge, we’re diving into the heart of the seasons. Whether you feel the warmth of the summer sun, the crisp air of autumn, the icy breath of winter, or the fresh bloom of spring, we want you to compose a piece that captures the essence of your favorite season.

The Challenge

Choose your favorite season—spring, summer, autumn, or winter—and compose a piece that reflects how the season starts and ends. Your composition should take the listener on a journey through the season, starting with the feeling of it beginning and ending with the sensation that it is fading away.

Additionally, you must select one instrument to represent an aspect of nature from that season and use it to simulate its sound (e.g., an oboe to represent autumn leaves falling). Be creative in how you capture nature’s voice!

Instructions:

  1. Original Composition: Your composition must be created specifically for this challenge. No pre-existing scores allowed.
  2. Season Representation: In your score’s description, you must:
    • Mention the season you chose.
    • Explain what you love about that season.
    • Describe which instrument you used to represent a natural element of the season (e.g., flutes representing wind, percussion imitating rain).
  3. Time Limit: The piece should be between 1-3 minutes long.
  4. Submissions: Only one score per participant.
  5. Collaborations are welcome (up to 3 composers).

Scoring Criteria:

✅ Seasonal Atmosphere (20 points):

The composition effectively captures the chosen season, from the beginning to the end, and reflects its unfolding journey.

✅ Nature Representation (20 points):

The selected instrument creatively simulates a natural element of the season, enhancing the overall feel of the composition.

✅ Engagement (20 points):

The piece maintains the listener's attention throughout and evokes a clear sense of the season.

✅ Transitions (20 points):

The transitions are smooth and well-crafted, guiding the listener through the progression of the season in a natural flow.

✅ Emotional Impact (15 points):

The composition successfully evokes the emotional essence of the chosen season, making the listener feel the atmosphere of that time of year.

✅ Founders’ Enjoyment (5 points):

The overall enjoyment and appreciation of the piece by the founders of Flat.

Bonus Points:

  • Include a section with tempo changes that reflect the seasonal transition (5 points).
