I have been writing songs for almost 12 years now and, believe me, choosing your working tools is fundamental to build a successful career. Today I want to share with you my opinion on why Flat is a must-have tool for a songwriter.
To begin with
Not all songwriters have had a strong background in music theory, so having an intuitive but highly professional tool like Flat is a gift. The interface has a fresh and beautiful design, which makes you want to sit down and compose. In my case, for example, although I had a formal education in music, I did not dedicate myself to classical music, or to being an excellent instrumentalist, so it is normal for me to go a long time without writing a musical score. Therefore, I feel a little rusty every time I need to write my music down, but Flat makes it so that everything comes back to my mind quickly. I do not have to invest a lot of time and effort to learn how to use the editor and I can concentrate on what I love the most: creating.
I am originally from Costa Rica, and right now I live in Bogotá. However, I have several projects with people who are in different parts of the world. Add to this the fact that we are confined due to the COVID situation. You can't imagine what a lifesaver it is, being able to collaborate in real-time on the same score. You don't have to wait for the musicians you work with to review an arrangement, or to send scores back and forth. You can write on the same score in real-time. What is more, I cannot control when inspiration comes to me, which makes offline writing truly useful. Knowing that I can access and edit my score from anywhere, regardless of the internet connection, is one of the aspects that makes Flat my favorite software to write my music.
Another great aspect: Flat is not just a music notation software, it is a community. In Flat you will find professional and amateur musicians connected by a genuine love for music. In Flat, I can make my score public to get feedback from other musicians, which is really helpful for me to improve my compositions. This is a plus that you won't find on other platforms.
My favorite features
Speaking of Flat's features, many of them make writing songs much easier. There are some that I want to talk to you about. I usually write my songs using the guitar, so it is vital for me to be able to add tablatures and chord grids. Also, you can edit chord grids to specify how you want those chords to be played.
Finally, a feature I love and that helps me saving a lot of time is transposition. Sometimes, when we compose a song, we don't know who will sing it. The singer might have a different range of voice than expected. Therefore, being able to transpose the whole score in a couple of clicks is a blessing! It also gives you the option, in case you are the one singing, to try different keys and choose the best one for you.
That's all for today. To all the songwriters out there, I totally recommend Flat for your creations.
Best,
